MFL Curriculum Intent
The Modern Languages Department prepares our students to be global citizens who use a modern language to confidently engage with the wider world. Students are taught to communicate effectively in a wide range of situations. We promote independent learning skills and provide opportunities for reflection and self-correction. Students who study a language have a sound knowledge of cultures and traditions around the world.
At KS3 (Years 7 and 8), we follow the National Curriculum and students acquire the vocabulary they need to understand a variety of topics. They build a secure framework of grammar rules which they use to communicate in a range of contexts. They develop the tools they need to become confident in all four language skills.
At KS4 (Years 9, 10 and 11), students work towards achieving mastery of their chosen language of study. Grammar rules are reinforced and embedded, vocabulary is broadened and confidence is nurtured. Work becomes more challenging across the Key Stage which enables students to fully develop all communication skills. In Year 11 we focus more on exam skills so that students achieve their full potential in the GCSE.
Students are fully supported in their learning through a variety of strategies. All students are provided with vocabulary books and knowledge organisers which promotes independence in their learning. Students are supported in the classroom through a range of strategies, according to their individual needs.
Progress and attainment are tracked through a rigorous system of assessment. Students are tested in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) at the end of every module. There is also an end of year exam in years 7-9. Assessment tasks mirror those of the GCSE and so we can confidently predict GCSE performance from year 7. Students take a mock GCSE exam in Year 10 and twice more in Year 11, so that they are thoroughly prepared for the Edexcel GCSE.
Our enrichment programme includes trips abroad, Business Language Challenge visits, in-school competitions and visiting theatre companies.
