
Mathematics at Moat Community College
At Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8), all students follow the National Curriculum through a carefully sequenced programme of study. Topics are deliberately ordered to help students build secure understanding over time and retain key knowledge.
Our curriculum places mathematical thinking at the heart of every lesson. Students are encouraged to explore ideas, make connections and explain their reasoning through carefully designed questions and tasks. Lessons provide opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of concepts while also practising and applying their knowledge to ensure it is retained.
Across Key Stage 3, students develop confidence and fluency in the five key areas of mathematics: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Ratio and Proportion, and Statistics.
At Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 and 11), all students study Edexcel GCSE Mathematics, with some also working towards Functional Skills qualifications where appropriate. The curriculum builds on Key Stage 3, continuing to develop both strong conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.
Lessons are designed to challenge students to think hard. Through the use of carefully structured questions, variation, and opportunities for discussion, students are supported in making links within and across mathematical topics, as well as applying their learning to unfamiliar situations. This approach helps students develop a deeper, more flexible understanding of mathematics.
The curriculum is designed to build on prior knowledge while allowing students to apply their skills in increasingly complex contexts.
Assessment is regular and primarily formative, enabling teachers to identify gaps and respond quickly. Feedback is focused on helping students improve, with misconceptions addressed as they arise and learning adapted to meet students’ needs.
